Sisters of Notre Dame Joyfully Sharing God's Goodness and Provident Care
SND Ministries SND Associates SND Vocation Partnership for Mission
Each day we invite you to read the Sunday Gospel, focusing on one aspect.

  1. Place yourself in an attitude of receptivity to the word that God wishes to reveal to you at this particular time.
  2.  Slow your mind, gradually becoming still inside and out. Sit in that stillness for a moment, being aware that God is as present as your every breath.
  3. Invite God into your life now.
  4. Read the Gospel slowly, preferably audibly.
  5. Select a day of the week from the list below.
  6.  Spend a few prayerful moments with the focus of that day.

Gospel for the Feast of Peter and Paul, Apostles—Matthew 16:13-19

"When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’

They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’

He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter said in reply, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’"

Sunday
What comes to your mind as you read this Gospel account?
How is Jesus’ question relevant today?
How relevant is it for you?

Heritage word—". . . walk in all simplicity and uprightness on the way of the Lord!

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Monday

"When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’"

What answer might Jesus be looking for here?
What is your answer?
How deeply does your answer impact your lifestyle?

Heritage word—"(God) asks me only to lean on him and to be led by all the marks he has always given of his providence, to abandon myself completely into his hands."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Tuesday

"When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’"

Hear Jesus asking people of our day this question.
What might influence their answers?
What influences your answer?

Heritage word—"We must have courage in the century we live in. Great souls are needed, souls having the interests of God at heart."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Wednesday

"When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’"

What message did those prophets seem to convey to the people of Caesarea Philippi?
What does that say about their expectations of Jesus?
What are your expectations of Jesus?

Heritage word—"Learn to appreciate the benefits which the good God showers on us in abundance."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Thursday

"He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’"

Sit with this question addressed to you.
Do you find yourself easily able to answer Jesus, or is there some difficulty in responding to him?
How has Jesus answered that question for you by the way he has intervened in your life, by the people he has sent into your life, or by the urgings of your heart?

Heritage word—"The values Jesus places before us in His incarnation and life are eternal."

(Sister Mary Sujita, 9th Superior General of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Friday

"Simon Peter said in reply, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father."

What was Jesus really saying to Peter here?
How might Peter have felt at Jesus’ comment?
Quiet yourself enough to allow your heavenly Father to speak to you.

Heritage word—"You know we obtain everything from the good God by prayer."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)
